I. THE MAP II. THE MAGAZINE
The Roam Series
Between the winter of 2018 and summer of 2020 I was lucky enough to have the chance to go on a number of spirited trips to Europe. After having spent hours researching before and editing photos after, I decided it might be fun to put it all together into a series of travel journals I named, βThe Roam Series.β What follows are a number of those photos and assets I created while working on this project.
WHY?
My dream project
A BRIEF INTRO
A travel journal cum magazine.
I love to travel β Iβve been doing it since before I was a year old. With family in France, Iβve been going on summer trips to Nice to visit my fatherβs side of the family since before I can remember. In 2018, I began planning a summer road trip across the CΓ΄te dβAzur and into the Italian Riviera, during which point I got a little carried away. My passions and talents began to converge into what I envisioned as a journal. Or a magazine? I wasnβt sure yet, but the makings of something special were in place. I started with the map and went on from there.
I. THE MAP
All maps tell a story.
No matter from what era or in what language, maps have a purpose. From a basic standpoint, they show the relationships between elements of some space, for my cases, geographical. But as anyone whoβs gone beyond Google, maps, especially the older ones, tell a kind of story.
Iβve always been fascinated by maps and had always wanted to draw one, so I began with my destinations. While I researched, I began incorporating pieces of what I learned into my maps. Apples from Normandy, lemons from Sicily, or famous architecture or monuments.
II. THE MAGAZINE
Finally, a place for all those photos.
A big part of making this magazine, having taken inspiration from countless travel magazines Iβve read in the past, was to create a space for my photos to live. Photography, and in particular travel photography, has been a big part of my life, but the big issue I had was aside from the maybe one or two photos I posted to instagram or got printed, they would often be lost to the folders in my computer. The magazine gave me a way to contextualize and a structure to edit down to fit. It also began to influence the way I shot, as I envisioned certain layouts in my head.
I shot this trip on my Canon Rebel with a 35mm.
